Wellington, Somerset

Wellington is a small industrial town of approximately 14,000 people in rural Somerset, England, situated seven miles south west of Taunton near the border with Devon.

The town has two large employers; Relyon bed manufacturers, part of the Steinhoff Group, and Swallowfields who produce aerosols. Beside many small businesses and traders Wellington also has a thriving town centre that has so far withstood the direct competition of the nearby county town of Taunton.

Wellington boasts an impressive array of amenities for a small town and maintains its own cinema, the Wellesley, an arts centre, youth centre, sports centre, football club, rugby club, bowling club, archery club, squash club and various other activities.

Wellington has won the Portman Cup several times in the Britain in Bloom contest.

Wellington is most famous for the Duke of Wellington Sir Arthur Wellesley who commanded the British army in the peninsular war which culminated with the battle of Waterloo. He took his title from the town and a large three sided obelisk monument over looks the town from the nearby Blackdown Hills in honour of his victories.
